A-fib – atrial fibrillation (Medtronic.com)

  • Definition – an irregular, rapid heart rate
  • Signs/symptoms – heart palpitations, fatigue, shortness of breath, weakness, lightheadedness, chest discomfort/pain
  • Dangers – aides in forming blood clots that can lead to stroke
  • Risk factors/Causes – smoking, caffeine, HTN, obesity, elevated cholesterol, alcohol, sleep apnea, sedentary lifestyle
  • Treatment – medications, surgery (cardioversion, catheter ablation)

Arrhythmia – sinus arrhythmia, ventricular fibrillation (Patient Teaching made Incredibly Easy)

  • Definition – an abnormal change in heart rate, heart rhythm or both caused by disruption of the electrical impulse’s pathway
  • Signs/symptoms –
  • Causes/risk factors – congenital abnormalities, inadequate flood flow to the hear, myocardial infarction, heart disease, drug toxicity
  • Treatment – medications, pacemakers, defibrillators, ablation (surgery to correct the electrical signal in the heart)
